Equality Diversity and Inclusive Research Association
The Road to EDIRA: A road less travelled.
What Is Inclusive Research?
Traditionally, the concept of inclusive research was grounded in the field of learning disabilities, where it emphasized incorporating the perspectives of participants in research design and execution. However, this approach is now expanding across disciplines, becoming essential in understanding and addressing the needs of underrepresented populations.
Our EDIRA campaign is designed to champion inclusivity and equality to drive improvements in health equity. We actively engage people from diverse backgrounds, abilities, and experiences, ensuring that each individual’s voice is heard and valued. This diversity creates a richer, fairer representation of the communities we serve.
Authentic Knowledge
Inclusive Research is said said to empower the participants and produces authentic knowledge. Advocates of inclusive research state that a central premise in inclusive research is that those who have in the past so often been the mere objects of investigation themselves, become the agents of their own transformation.
Prioritising Equity and Fairness
Equity goes beyond equal opportunity—it’s about providing the tools and support necessary for everyone to succeed. In our research, we take active steps to ensure equity and fairness by offering translated materials, accessible resources, and flexible methodologies to meet the unique needs of all participants.
The Power of Mixed Methods Research
To truly capture the complexity of human experiences, mixed methods research plays a crucial role. Think of it as combining a magnifying glass with a telescope: the quantitative data gives us the broad overview, while qualitative insights help us dive into the intricate details. This holistic approach ensures that we can both see the bigger picture and understand the finer nuances of the issues we’re addressing.
Driving Positive Change
At EDIRA, we believe that inclusive research is the path to meaningful, lasting change. By amplifying the voices of those often left unheard, we can build a future where research truly reflects the diversity of our communities, and better choices are made for all.
Together, let’s shape a more inclusive world where every voice matters, and research drives real progress for all.
Whose voice is it anyway?
At the beginning of our EDIRA journey we were invited to joint Medics 4 Rare Diseases to be involved in a consultation in response to the Rare Diseases Framework. Please download and read the report.
